STCW Training FAQs

What is STCW and why does it matter?

STCW stands for the International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers. It sets the global baseline for safety and competence at sea. If you want to work on a commercial vessel (merchant ship, ferry, workboat or superyacht), you’ll be expected to hold STCW certificates appropriate to your role.

Anyone joining a commercially operated vessel in a safety-related capacity typically needs STCW Basic Training (sometimes called “Basic Safety Training”). It’s the entry point for new deck/engine crew, yacht crew and hotel/catering staff on board.

The standard package covers core safety skills delivered through theory and practical exercises, for example:

  • Personal Survival Techniques (PST)

  • Fire Prevention & Fire Fighting (FPFF)

  • Elementary First Aid (EFA)

  • Personal Safety & Social Responsibilities (PSSR)
Many roles also require Security Awareness (PSA), and those with designated security duties may need PDSD.

Basic Training is usually completed in about five days. Certificates are accepted internationally; however, certain elements (e.g., PST, FPFF, and for some roles PSCRB/Advanced Fire Fighting) require updating every 5 years to keep skills current. Sea service and drills may reduce what you need to refresh – check current flag-state guidance.

The STCW standard is the same, but the mix of courses can differ by vessel and job. Yacht crew often pair Basic Training with Food Safety/Hygiene and Security Awareness; watchkeepers and boat operators may need PSCRB. Always confirm requirements with your employer/flag state.

Some theory (e.g., PSSR or security awareness) may be available in blended format, but practical modules must be done in person (pool, fire ground, first-aid scenarios). You should be medically fit for practical training; minimum age is typically 16. Bring photo ID – your joining instructions will list any other documents.

Our team are here to answer any questions you have regarding your training needs.
