It was first established in 1978 and has undergone several amendments. These updates ensure that all seafarers, regardless of experience, keep their emergency response skills sharp and current.
Which STCW Courses Need to Be Updated?
Not all modules require updating, but the following core STCW courses are subject to mandatory refresher training every five years:
- Personal Survival Techniques (PST)
- Fire Prevention and Fire Fighting (FPFF)
- Proficiency in Survival Craft and Rescue Boats (PSCRB)
- Advanced Fire Fighting (AFF)
These are practical, hands-on courses that cover life-saving and emergency procedures. As such, keeping your certification up to date is both a legal requirement and a personal safety measure.
