How Often Should You Update Your STCW Training Courses?

For anyone working at sea, safety is non-negotiable, and maintaining your training is just as important as completing it. Whether you’re crew on a commercial vessel or stepping into the world of superyachts, STCW training courses are a mandatory foundation for maritime safety. But once qualified, how long does your certification last, and when should you refresh it?

At Seascope Maritime Training, we’re often asked how often STCW courses need to be updated. Here’s what you need to know.

What Is STCW and Why Does It Need Renewing?

The STCW Code (Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers) is an internationally recognised framework that ensures crew members are properly trained for emergency situations on board. It was first established in 1978 and has undergone several amendments. These updates ensure that all seafarers, regardless of experience, keep their emergency response skills sharp and current.

Which STCW Courses Need to Be Updated?

Not all modules require updating, but the following core STCW courses are subject to mandatory refresher training every five years:

  • Personal Survival Techniques (PST)
  • Fire Prevention and Fire Fighting (FPFF)
  • Proficiency in Survival Craft and Rescue Boats (PSCRB)
  • Advanced Fire Fighting (AFF)

These are practical, hands-on courses that cover life-saving and emergency procedures. As such, keeping your certification up to date is both a legal requirement and a personal safety measure.

What Happens If You Don’t Update?

Failing to update your STCW certification can prevent you from being employed in a seagoing role. Employers and flag states require valid and current certification to ensure compliance with international maritime law. Many ports and shipping companies will not permit boarding without proof of refresher training within the last five years.

When Should You Book a Refresher Course?

To avoid gaps in certification, it’s recommended to book your STCW refresher training a few months before your five-year expiry. This ensures you remain compliant without interrupting employment or deployment.

At Seascope Maritime Training, we offer STCW refresher packages designed to meet these requirements efficiently, with both theoretical and practical components delivered by experienced instructors.

How Can You Check If You’re Due?

If you’re unsure when your certification expires, check the issue date on your STCW certificate. You’ll need to renew the applicable courses before reaching the five-year mark.

Still unsure? Our team at Seascope is happy to review your certificates and advise on the correct refresher pathway based on your current role and training history.
